Trinidad Carnival 2011

I finally reached the beautiful twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago. This year's Carnival was epic, as I decided to attend new events and was able to cross the historic stage on Carnival Tuesday. To re-cap let’s start with the first event.

Flight Cruise- Cost $300tt

This was a last-minute event held on the Sunday before the official carnival week began. This event included a boat ride and after party called “Flight Cruise Cooler Fete”. The boat ride started at 3 p.m. and ended at 6 p.m. Once we docked, party-goers could easily walk next door to Pier 1 for the cooler fete. I’ve been on this boat ride in previous years, and was very disappointed with this year’s event. The organizers should have never discontinued the boat ride in the first place! Previously, it was hard to get tix and the boat would be packed to capacity (with plenty Bacchanal on the ride). This used to be the best warm-up party for foreigners. Unfortunately, this year was just “ok.” Plenty men was on this ride (that’s good for me!), but I’m sure the men on the boat were upset at the lack of women. At least the music was great with Toronto DJ Dr. Jay, DJ Spice, D’Enforcas and others played the latest soca tunes.

After the ride ended, the riders proceeded next door to the cooler fete. What can I say about this event? It was way better then the boate ride! If you’re not sure what a cooler fete is, It’s a party where you can enter with your own drinks. I wish Toronto would allow cooler fete’s but that’s another story.

As you enter you can see different crews setting-up in their spots with their coolers. The same DJs that played on the on the boat also spun music at the cooler fete. They also had a “riddem section” that party-goers enjoyed.

Event Rating: 6 flags but close to dragging it since I didn’t enjoy the boat ride.

Video clip is dark but you can hear the vibes

Monday –Machel HD Day $250tt Gen Admin

Let’s just say the hype and the energy was high for the return of Machel & HD Family Concert. I wish I had purchased the VVIP ticket because we were very far from the stage and were divided from the front of the main concert section by a huge gate. We could only view the concert via flat screen t.v which was disappointing to say the least. I figured that since I’m in Trinidad I'm still gonna have a few drinks and have a good time! Speaking of drinks, as we entered the venue, we were served complimentary Puncheon Rum shots. Oh gawd! Who tell me to take one?. That shot burn me nose, throat, heart and the rest of my body. They shouldn’t sell that kind of liquor!

As Machel came on stage the crowd got very excited. The crowd got even more hype when other performers including Pitbull, Patrice, Zan, Farmer Nappy, and Benjai hit the stage. A moment I truly enjoyed was watching the Official King (Mighty Sparrow) and Official Queen (Calypso Rose) get crowned by Dwight York and Brian Lara. These two epitomize what it means to be a Trini!

Event rating: 6 flags because I had to watch the performance on screen.

Tuesday-Eyes Wide Shut 200tt

This is one of my favorite parties (as I mentioned before in my previous post). I can easily go to the front of the stage, not get trampled on and feel safe in the crowd. This was one of the best Eyes Wide Shut parties Carnival Lime Destinations (CLD) have attended. After attending this event I’ve decided that I don’t need to attend another Machel concert again. I will wait until Eyes Wide Shut to see him up close and personal.

Machel sang all his greatest hits! I give madd kudos to his dancers, especially the young lady that dance to Gal Bend Over. That girl can well move, shake, flex and dance! Destra also performed at this event and as always she looked HOTT! Swappi, Skinny Fabulous and other guests performed. Note: I included a clip of a soca fan that took over the front line. This guy gave me real kicks.

Event Rating: 9 flags because I was able to see my favorite performers up close and personal.

Wednesday – Lime @ Hyatt (all Inclusive) Hotel $1000tt

Tickets for this all-inclusive event could only be purchased on-line or at the hotel. Paparazzi lined the red carpet as we entered the venue. I felt like an A-list celebrity walking down the long red carpet. Guest were welcomed with delicious appetizers of salmon and caviar. The event was spread alongside the waterfront, so the ambiance was absolutely fabulous! The first thing we checked out was the food. There were so many options including Wild Meat, Arabic, Chinese cuisine, Indian cuisine, Richards Bake and Shark, a grill station and a doubles station. They also served Sushi in the VVIP section. The food was great and it never ran out.

After eating, it was time to check out the drinks section. There were Nuvo, Patron, Champagne, Johnny Walker, Margarita and Cuervo Tequila stands in addition to a huge bar for all other drinks. There were so many options that I decided to stick with Nuvo for the whole night. The best thing about the bar was that there were no lines since everything was spread out.

Performers at the event included were David Rudder, Karma and Kes the Band. Celebrity guest appearance were the cast of "The Game" Hosea Chanchez and Wendy Raquel Robinson. Idris Elba was supposed to be a guest, however, he didn’t arrive in Trinidad on time. That was disappointing because he was the main reason I attended this party. The crowd was great and had a mix of young and old. There  were your bachannalist crew and social crew at this event. I definitely would attend this event again.

Event Rating: 10 flags because the event was spacious, the food was great, the bar never buss and the vibes was nice this was a well organized event.

Thursday- Beach House (All Inclusive) $800tt

This event started at 2 p.m. and ended 10 p.m. Unfortunately, we arrived late (because we left late) and the traffic was stickin. It took us 1 ½ hours to get out of town. If you plan on attending this event leave by 1 p.m. or earlier.

When we finally reached the event my eyes popped opened as I noticed the amount of people in the party. Food was on my mind, so we walked straight to the food area. Lawd father if you see line fo so! To save time, our crew decided to go in different lines and take samples from each line. We would meet together and share the food. In addition to the food tents, there were different bar tents, but most of them were filled with long lines. There was a Nuvo tent, but I only had one drink for the night since we went a little crazy with drinks the previous night.

Music was great! The DJ was situated in the middle of the party with a huge light to brighten up the venue. Oh, I can’t forget the MEN! I’ve never seen so many “Fywne” ass men in one party! Everywhere I turned I saw sexy ass men. I was in heaven. Fellas, there was plenty woman too (but I ain’t watching them).

Event Rating: 7 flags because It was over crowded and the lines for food and drinks were just nuts.

Friday- Frenzy Boat Ride (All Inclusive) $400tt

This event started at 3 p.m. and end at 6 p.m. This boat is smaller than the Treasure Queen, however, it was a more intimate ride. Last year, I went overboard with the drinks and learned my lesson the hard way, so this year I remembered to pace myself. I started drinking light with Malibu and orange juice, however when they started to serve the Johnny Walker Blue I quickly took two shots. The food on this ride included doubles and chicken or lamb gyros wraps. The vibe on the ride was nice. Music was played by Dr. Jay, Soca Sweetness and DJ Dane. I had a great time!

Event Rating: 8 flags because the drinks were flowing, food was good and the vibe was nice.

Sunny Side Up Breakfast fete (All Inclusive) $700 Single tix $1200 Couples Tix

This event started at 4 a.m. I always enjoyed breakfast parties. The feeling of partying early morning and see the sunrise is the best feeling!

As we entered the venue, we were supplied with a Sunny Side Breakfast cup for drinks. This party is held along a long street with a stage at the end of the street for a live show. Again, the first thing I will review is the food. The crew walked towards the food tents which served pelau, pancakes, doubles, eggs, saltfish, fruit to dip in a chocolate fountain, coffee, tea and other food items. The bar was stocked with Johnny Walker, Malibu, Hennessey and Smirnoff along with other premium drinks, fruit juice, energy drinks and chaser. As the Carnival Lime Destination crew “got on wotless” a bubble machine and the water hose came on. It was perfect timing as the sun was blazing! By the time 8 a.m. approached, Roy Cape and the team started to blow horns, hit drums to get the crowd excited. I just loved seeing the yellow Sunny Side Up cups in the air while ladies bend over and fellas mash up the speaker box!

Event Rating: 9 flags because the food was on point, Blaxx tear up de stage, and the wotless behavior under the bubble foam and water hose.

Eclipze- (All Inclusive) Cost $600tt

This event was held in Anchorage. I absolutely love this party because the crowd was grown and sexy and very stylish. The food was way better then Beach House because they offered doubles, bake and shark, curry goat, ribs, wings, Chinese cuisine. To top it all off, for dessert I had red velvet cake. D’Bandit and other DJs spun an incredible selection of the latest soca (which kept the crowd getting on wotless). In the middle of the venue they had a seating area that served Champagne. On the other side of the venue they had a margarita tent. As the party ended a group of fellas starting singing and making noise, they definitely were not ready to go home. I will definitely return to this event.

Event Rating: 9 flags because the location was spacious, food was excellent, music was on point and the vibe was just right.

J’ouvert- Insomniacs Cost $475tt

This is the best organized J’ouvert band I have played in. First, the quality of the shirts was expensive; I didn’t even want to dirty my shirt. The official start time for this band is 4 a.m., however, Insomniacs had a pre-party which started at 2 a.m.

As we entered the secluded pre-party area, we were handed with a bottle of white paint. They had a bar station, a clean bathroom station and a stage with drummers playing alongside the music truck. The vibe was fun and safe. They also had ladies walking around with a bottle of Vodka for shots. When 4 a.m. finally approached fireworks started to go off (Yep I said fireworks). The gate opened for the truck to embark on the streets as Busy Signal’s song Touch Road played. The crowd got hype and starting to chip on the road. Toronto DJ Dr. Jay and other DJs played on the music truck. I also noticed a few soca artists in the band including Alison Hinds, Kes the Band, Nadia Batson and Lil Bitts. As we reached half-way down our route, another set of fireworks went off and a truck with a hose sprayed the crowd with yellow paint.

When the band returned to our starting point, we were served with a breakfast package containing a cheese paste sandwich, saltfish sandwich, sweetbread, wafer bar and doubles. I’ve never had so much food in a J’ouvert band before! The band also provided a shower area to wash of the paint before heading back home. I had the best J’ouvert experience and I will definitely play with Insomniacs again.

Event Rating: 10 beacause they were well organized, the fireworks, the music was on point and breakfast was great.

Carnival Monday- Yuma Vibe

Costume pick up was smooth, but it took us at least an hour to go through the entire process. My friend had an issue with the belt (which they fixed right away), however others have had a miserable experience. I had no problems.

The Carnival Lime Destiations (CLD) crew met the band around 12 p.m. The vibe was really nice and there were plenty “Fwyne” ass men in the band. I’ve played with Tribe for the past 4 years and saw plenty woman, so when I immediately noticed how many men were in Yuma. I was in heaven! People said the band had 2500 masquerader, but I feel that there were more.

The drinks on the road were pretty good from Nuvo, Patron, Johnny, Grey Goose, Hennessey, Malibu and other premium drinks. Lunch was around 2 p.m. We were served Chinese cuisine from Hakka Restaurant ,but there were other options as well. For dessert we had Coldstone ice cream. The resting area had tents and mats for masquarders to rest on . After an hour and half spent in the rest area, we started for round two. Everyone was anxious to cross the stage, however, as we approach the Savannah around 8 p.m. we were told that we could not cross the stage (very disappointing)! All I kept thinking was that we better cross the stage Carnival Tuesday.

Carnival Monday Rating: 8 Drinks was flowing, Fwyne men, truck/route moving smoothly and lunch was good.

Carnival Tuesday- Yuma Vibe

We met with the band around 10 a.m., just as the band was getting ready to cross the downtown stage. Yuma looked fabulous and the vibe was NICE. After the band crossed the first judging point, the band started to approach Frederick Street to cross the main historic stage.

One, two, three, four hours passed as the band creeped towards the Savannah stage (mind you we did not eat lunch yet). By the time 5 p.m. reach it was time to get in our section. As the mic guy on the music truck yelled “Aquarius are you ready???” it was time for the big show. As we lined up to cross the stage, Yuma security formed a long line to keep us separated from other band section. When the security finally released us, each masquerader paraded, palanced, jumped, waved, stomped, trampled and took advantage of the stage. Iwer George came on stage and sang his famous song Come to Meh to get us hype. I officially cross the classic historic Savannah stage! The first time I played mas in Trinidad was four years ago when they removed the stage. Now that the stage returned I definitely took Advantage. I saw people kissing the stage, hugging the stage and jumping on the stage with every section in the band. The only disappointing experience was the long wait to cross the stage. I personally like the flow of a moving truck, so if the stage is removed again I would be ok with it.

Carnival Tuesday Rating: 6 flags becauuse of the long wait to cross the stage. Late lunch and they didn’t have a round two or an after party. Now the question is, will I play with Yuma again? Yes, they need some improvements such as security and proper road management but definitely play with Yuma again.

Trinidad Carnival I LOVE YOU!!! This was my best year ever. To all the Carnival Lime Destinations members, thank you for making our experience memorable. So what’s next for CLD in 2011? Look out for a Carnival Lime Destinations launch party in Toronto in the summer, Barbados Cropover, Miami Carnival, Labor Day NYC Carnival, Trinidad Carnival 2012 and Jamaica Carnival 2012.
